Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra to travel to South Africa for off-season training later this month
New Delhi, August 11:
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will travel to Potchefstroom, South Africa, later this month for off-season training ahead of the 2023 season.
Chopra has been training in Patiala under the guidance of coach Klaus Bartonietz since returning from the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he finished a creditable eighth in the final.
The 24-year-old Chopra, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year, will be accompanied by Bartonietz and physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha on the trip to South Africa.
Chopra is expected to spend around six weeks in Potchefstroom, where he will focus on strength and conditioning work, as well as technical improvements.
The off-season training is important for Chopra as he looks to build on his success in 2022 and prepare for the upcoming season, which includes the Asian Games and the World Athletics Championships.
Chopra has been in good form this season, winning the gold medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland in June with a throw of 89.30m.
He also won the silver medal at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm in July with a throw of 89.94m.
