Laura Robson says Iga Swiatek did something she’s ‘barely ever’ seen before vs Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals
Robson lauds Swiatek’s ‘unbelievable’ performance and ability to ‘flip the momentum’
Laura Robson has hailed Iga Swiatek’s performance in her WTA Finals victory over Coco Gauff as “unbelievable”, highlighting the Pole’s ability to “flip the momentum” when the American was playing her best tennis. Swiatek, 21, outplayed the 18-year-old Gauff 6-3, 6-0 in their Group B match on Monday, extending her current winning streak to 11 matches.
Swiatek’s dominance
Robson, a former British No. 1, was particularly impressed by the way Swiatek was able to handle Gauff’s power and aggression. The American started the match strongly, holding her serve in the first game and breaking Swiatek in the second to take an early lead.
However, Swiatek immediately broke back in the third game and then won the next four games in a row to take control of the set. Gauff managed to stop the rot in the eighth game, but Swiatek broke her serve again in the ninth game to take the set 6-3.
The second set was even more one-sided, with Swiatek breaking Gauff’s serve three times to win 6-0. It was the ninth time that Swiatek had won a set 6-0 this season, more than any other player on the WTA Tour.
Swiatek’s resilience
Robson said that Swiatek’s ability to cope with Gauff’s early pressure was key to her victory. “I think the biggest thing was that she didn’t panic when Gauff started playing well,” Robson said. “She just kept playing her own game, and she was able to flip the momentum when Gauff was playing her best tennis.
“I think that’s what makes Swiatek such a great player,” Robson added. “She’s able to stay calm under pressure, and she’s always able to find a way to win.”
Swiatek’s future prospects
Robson believes that Swiatek has the potential to become one of the greatest players in history. “I think she’s got all the tools to be a multiple Grand Slam winner,” Robson said. “She’s got a great game, she’s very athletic, and she’s got a great mentality.
“I think she’s only going to get better, and I’m excited to see what she can achieve in the future.”
