LIVE RADAR: Severe weather threat increasing across North Texas
Damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes possible
North Texas residents should be prepared for severe weather this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the area, including Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Denton.
The main threats with these storms will be damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of North Texas in a slight risk for tornadoes, meaning that a few tornadoes are possible.
The storms are expected to develop along a dry line that will be moving across North Texas this afternoon. The dry line is a boundary between moist air to the east and dry air to the west.
When the dry line moves eastward, it can cause the atmosphere to become unstable and lead to the development of severe thunderstorms. The storms are expected to develop and move eastward across the area this afternoon. They could continue into the evening hours before weakening.
Residents in the affected areas should be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued. They should also secure loose objects outdoors and avoid driving through flooded areas.
Here are some safety tips to follow during severe weather:
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch and cover your head with your hands.
- Do not drive through flooded areas.
- Be aware of the weather forecast and listen to local news for updates.
- Have a plan in place for what to do if a tornado warning is issued.
