Marseille rally to help victims of Spanish floods during Auxerre fixture
Marseille came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Auxerre in Ligue 1 on Sunday, a day after launching an initiative to raise funds for flood victims in Spain.
The southern French club kicked off a campaign of solidarity at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday, the day after torrential rain caused widespread flooding that killed at least 16 people in the southeastern Spanish region of Murcia.
Marseille announced that they would donate one euro from each ticket sold for Sunday's match to the Spanish Red Cross.
Fans responded generously, with the club announcing on Sunday that they had already raised more than 50,000 euros.
Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli said he was "very proud" of his players for rallying after going behind to Hamza Sakhi's opener for Auxerre.
"We had a difficult start, but we came back well and we deserved this victory," said Sampaoli.
"I am very proud of my players for the way they reacted after conceding the first goal.
"We continued to believe in ourselves and we managed to turn the game around."
Marseille drew level through Dimitri Payet's penalty in the 33rd minute before Arkadiusz Milik grabbed the winner just after the hour mark.
Victory lifted Marseille up to third in the Ligue 1 standings, while Auxerre remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
