Marseille bolstering squad for Champions League push, Auxerre strengthening for Ligue 1 return
Ligue 1 clubs Olympique de Marseille and AJ Auxerre have made significant moves in the transfer market, bolstering their squads ahead of the upcoming season.
Marseille, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season and will compete in the Champions League this season, have signed Nuno Tavares from Arsenal and Jonathan Clauss from Lens.
Tavares, a 22-year-old left-back, joins Marseille on a season-long loan deal. He made 22 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
Clauss, a 29-year-old right-back, joins Marseille on a permanent deal from Lens. He made 37 appearances for Lens in all competitions last season, scoring five goals and providing 11 assists.
Marseille are hoping that the additions of Tavares and Clauss will help them challenge for the Ligue 1 title and make a deep run in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Auxerre, who won the Ligue 2 title last season and will return to Ligue 1 this season, have signed Kays Ruiz-Atil from Barcelona.
Ruiz-Atil, a 19-year-old attacking midfielder, joins Auxerre on a free transfer after his contract with Barcelona expired.
Ruiz-Atil is a highly-rated young player who has represented France at youth level. He made his debut for Barcelona's first team in 2021 and made four appearances for the club in all competitions.
Auxerre are hoping that the addition of Ruiz-Atil will help them stay in Ligue 1 next season.
The transfer window closes on September 1st, so there is still time for more moves to be made. However, Marseille and Auxerre have already made significant moves to strengthen their squads ahead of the upcoming season.
