Statement by UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Director Adele Khodr on the decimation of newborn care in the Gaza Strip
UNICEF calls for urgent action to protect the lives of newborns and their mothers in Gaza
Gaza, 20 July 2023
“The decimation of newborn care in the Gaza Strip is a tragedy that demands urgent action. In recent weeks, the region has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of newborn deaths due to a combination of factors, including the ongoing blockade, power outages, and a lack of essential medical supplies.
“Newborns are the most vulnerable members of our society, and they deserve the best possible care. However, in Gaza, they are being denied this basic right. The blockade has severely restricted the entry of essential medical supplies, including oxygen, incubators, and essential medicines. This has led to a sharp decline in the quality of care for newborns, who are now dying at an alarming rate.
“The power outages have also had a devastating impact on newborn care. Hospitals rely on electricity to power incubators and other life-saving equipment. When the power goes out, these machines stop working, and the lives of newborns are put at risk.
“In addition to the lack of essential medical supplies and power outages, the ongoing blockade has also led to a shortage of qualified medical personnel. Many doctors and nurses have left Gaza in search of better opportunities, and those who remain are overworked and underpaid. This shortage has further compromised the quality of care for newborns.
“UNICEF calls on all parties to the conflict to take immediate action to protect the lives of newborns and their mothers in Gaza. The blockade must be lifted, and essential medical supplies must be allowed to enter the region. The power outages must also be stopped, and qualified medical personnel must be allowed to work in Gaza without hindrance.
“The lives of thousands of newborns are at stake. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Action must be taken now.”
