Steinmeier's Attentiveness Grabs German Politicians' Attention

Steinmeier Lauds Martin

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German president, praised the outgoing head of the German Press Agency (DPA) Marko Martin for his lifetime of work."Marko Martin has shaped German journalism for over three decades," Steinmeier said during an oration in Bellevue Palace on Monday. "Under his leadership, the DPA has developed into a globally respected news agency that is the first port of call for the media, business, and politics in Germany and Europe."

Experienced Leadership

Martin, 66, had been at the helm of the DPA since 2010. He is set to retire at the end of the month and will be succeeded by Sven Gösmann. Steinmeier highlighted Martin's commitment to independent and objective journalism. He also praised Martin's role in strengthening the DPA's international presence. "Under Martin's leadership, the DPA has become an indispensable partner for journalists worldwide," Steinmeier said.

Advocating for Journalism

Steinmeier also used his speech to emphasize the importance of journalism in a democracy. "Free and independent journalism is the foundation of our democratic society," he said. "It is the task of journalists to hold those in power to account and to provide the public with the information they need to make informed decisions."

Appreciation from the Social Democrats

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the party Steinmeier belongs to, also thanked Martin for his work. "Marko Martin has been a tireless advocate for freedom of the press and independent journalism," said SPD leader Saskia Esken. "We are grateful for his many years of service and wish him all the best for the future."
