Trump asks Justice Department to investigate Iran's president
Former President Trump on Sunday called on the Justice Department to investigate Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi for allegedly committing genocide.
Trump's request came in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, in which he accused Raisi of being "directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iranian citizens." Trump also claimed that Raisi had "played a key role in the Iranian regime's systematic campaign of human rights abuses."
The Justice Department has not yet commented on Trump's request. However, it is unlikely that the department will open an investigation into Raisi, as he is the head of a foreign government.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the only international court that has jurisdiction to prosecute heads of state for genocide. However, Iran is not a member of the ICC, so the court does not have jurisdiction over Raisi.
Trump's request is likely to be seen as an attempt to pressure the Biden administration to take a more confrontational approach toward Iran. The Biden administration has been engaged in negotiations with Iran over its ядерная программа. However, the talks have been stalled for months, and there is no clear path forward.
Trump's request is also likely to be seen as an attempt to deflect attention from his own legal troubles. Trump is currently facing a criminal investigation by the Fulton County District Attorney's Office in Georgia. The investigation is focused on Trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
Trump is also facing a civil lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General's Office. The lawsuit alleges that Trump and his family engaged in fraudulent business practices. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in both cases.
