With Schools Reopening, East Brunswick PD Urges Caution Around Buses
Increased Traffic and Pedestrian Activity Requires Extra Vigilance
As schools reopen across the country this month, the East Brunswick Police Department (EBPD) urges drivers and pedestrians to exercise increased caution around school buses. With more children walking and biking to school, and buses making frequent stops, there is a greater risk of accidents.
Motorists Responsibilities
- Obey the speed limit: School zones typically have reduced speed limits to protect children. Slow down and be prepared for stopped buses.
- Stop for flashing lights: When a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop sign extended, all traffic must come to a complete stop, regardless of direction.
- Look out for children: Children may be crossing the street or running to catch the bus, so be vigilant and yield to pedestrians.
Pedestrians Responsibilities
- Cross at designated crosswalks: Use crosswalks marked with signs or painted lines. Avoid crossing in front of buses.
- Be aware of your surroundings: Look both ways before crossing the street and pay attention to oncoming traffic.
- Never cross behind a bus: Always cross in front of the bus, where the driver can see you.
Additional Safety Tips
In addition to following these rules, drivers and pedestrians can take additional steps to ensure safety around school buses:
- Leave early: Give yourself extra time to get to school or work to avoid rushing and potential accidents.
- Be patient: Expect delays and be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.
- Report violations: If you witness a vehicle illegally passing a stopped school bus, report it to the police immediately.
By following these tips, we can all help to keep our children safe as they return to school.
