Iranian Plot to Assassinate Former President Trump Foiled in New York City
Two Iranian Nationals Arrested, One Still at Large
In a significant development, the United States Department of Justice has announced the arrest of two Iranian nationals in New York City for their alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate former US President Donald Trump.
Background of the Plot
According to the indictment, the plot was orchestrated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), an elite branch of the Iranian military. The conspirators allegedly planned to hire a hitman to eliminate Trump in retaliation for the US killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
Arrests and Charges
Two of the alleged conspirators, Shahram Poursafi and Majid Ghorbani, were arrested in October 2022 in New York City. Both men are charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and other related offenses.
A third suspect, Vahid Moradi, remains at large. The FBI has issued an arrest warrant for Moradi, who is believed to be in Iran.
Alleged Role of the IRGC
The indictment alleges that the IRGC played a key role in directing the assassination plot. The IRGC allegedly provided funding, logistical support, and communication channels for the conspirators.
This is not the first time the IRGC has been accused of plotting to assassinate American officials. In recent years, the IRGC has been implicated in several assassination attempts against American targets in Europe and the Middle East.
Response from US Authorities
US Attorney Damian Williams praised the work of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies in thwarting the assassination plot.
"This plot was a serious threat to the safety of a former President of the United States," Williams said. "We will not tolerate any attempts by foreign powers to target American officials on our soil."
President Biden also condemned the plot and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
"This is a reminder that the threat from Iran is real and serious," Biden said. "We will not hesitate to take action to protect our people and our country from any threat."
Implications for Iran-US Relations
The foiled assassination plot is likely to further strain relations between Iran and the United States.
Iran has denied involvement in the plot and has denounced the US allegations.
However, the US government has presented evidence that it alleges implicates the IRGC in the plot.
The assassination plot is likely to be a major topic of discussion in future diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the United States.
